Woodstock Legion

I am one of many who enjoy going to the Woodstock Legion on their free Sat. night dances. As a group of people who go there I just can't understand the reason why their club is dropping the main draw each month.
Brian Gillis has been playing there for a long time and brings in many faithful followers. His music surpasses most entertainers in south-western Ontario.
I think that the entertainment people have made a big mistake in letting him go..and the executive have shown that planning is not at all a part of their agenda.
I suggest that those who are aware of this great talent, should get in touch with the club and express their dismay. We are now planning to not attend the club because of this stupid move. The club has email and a phone number..Let em' know...Lyn and 12 others

We have been members of the legion for 15+yrs and we too like going down on a saturday night to enjoy the entertainment....but we have stopped enjoying this "ritual" we enjoyed with our friends and have stopped going down as frequently as we used to and that is due to how often Brian Gillis has played there. Dont get me wrong he IS a great entertainer but when he plays that often you can almost guess what song he is going to play next or even what he will say next. Variety is the spice of life .....

He only plays there once a month. Some of the bands play them twice a month.they are boring. The name of the game is to make money for the Legion. He does. And he always will.I have been a member for over twenty years. Our club's problem is not his, it's how the entertainment people book the worst acts, like karaoke, way too much country music etc.

That reminds me, I should take my kids to the family breakfast they have on the weekends. Are the breakfasts any good and do you have to be a member to attend?

Some people enjoy the karaoke which hasnt been there in a long time ,My husband did the karaoke once a month for many years and sudenly not rebooked, They may have a better turn out for the karaoke if it was advertised as karaoke, They did seem to have the same djs and bands playing everymonth and some twice a month , Like one persom said its good to have some variety , I cant coment on Bruce Hair as I have never heard him play . There will always be people to complain no matter who they have playing at the legion , or no matter who is doing the bookings , Its hard to please all the people all of the time . If You enjoy a night out with your friends its a great place to gather no matter who is playing that night. Just my thoughts

i never implied that the clubs problems were his(brian gillis).....we've been a big supporter and always will be of the legion...and i agree with maur55 no matter what people ALWAYS complain...so if you mix it up...a little of this a little of that...maybe try something to encourage a younger crowd in....then everyone wins...also remember the entertainment people have a budget to work with....im sure its not easy sometimes being in their shoes.......

Shame on the entertainment chairman for not asking this great DJ back. This club needs him.and what he has done by bringing extra people to the Sat. nights should warrant his services. The only DJ who takes time to personally greet and welcome people to the club and encourage membership( which is NEEDED).Maybe the chairman should keep his eyes out of the beer glass and concentrate on what is happening on the dance floor. Shame on you .You forced him out.. He'll play somewhere else in Woodstock and the club here will have no one showing up.

Would I be safe to presume that all the people who are complaining ran for the executive at their Branch last year and didn't get in? Or at the very least that they have attended a meeting to express their concerns before going to a public forum to put down their Branch and the people who VOLUNTEER there?

Hi yes the legion does have a buget I used to DJ at the woodstock branch many years ago I always had a great crowed an had a great time. Yes Some of the entertainment they bring in sucks plus some of the entertainers have priced them self out the door and when you have an entertainment chairman that only wants who he wants in there to entertain the people don't help.

well yes they may have a budget and they have hired people who will play for lower rates but they should have asked the ones they had there for years if they would lower their price in stead of just not calling again , After years of doing the legion it would be just common courtesy to say thanks for your many years here but we are replacing you with more affordable entertainment ,

Today was Breakfast with Santa at the Legion ...and i have to say im extremely disappointed in how it was handled this year. Its usually held on a Sunday with the same Santa my own kids grew up believing was the "real" Santa that my grandchildren now believe in....that was until we attended today....as soon as they seen and then heard "santa" they turned to us and said "that is a fake Santa"....i know some people will say that some people dont like change BUT sometimes change isnt always for the good....this years Santa's heart was NOT into his job or myself and our grandkids would not have overheard a personal conversation about legion business and more....the USUAL Santa was warm and jolly and VERY much INTO being Santa ..his role didnt end if there wasnt a child directly in front of him....after we left the legion we drove up town to visit the "real" Santa so our grandchildren know that the one they seen at the legion was just one of his "helpers"....im hoping this was enough for them to keep on believing in that special dream of santa....unfortunatly a family tradition was ruined today...we all left very disappointed....and this in no way reflects upon the kitchen volunteers to make this day happen without them it wouldnt...my hat goes off to all of you...next year when this same event comes around and this years Santa is there i will know then that OUR family tradition at the legion is over.....

I think you sound like you dont like the legion maybe you should become one of the members who have to plan events etc, then things might go your way .

Post #21 By maur55, 7 months ago | 0 Votes | Vote: Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

maybe you should re-read my post.....its not about ME not liking the legion i happen to enjoy it very much...and its not about things going MY way....its my opinion on our experience...its about family tradition...its about bad choices.....some of "us" are santas some of "us"arnt........an old person does not a santa make....and we wernt the only legion members who felt this way ...we ran into quite a few of them at the "real" santas house all with the same opinion of the event. The children are what matters on this day ....and the santa that day should have acted like santa and not like a person in a costume complaining how hot his beard is while he was tugging it off his face and thats just one example....so open up your eyes and re-read the post and read what truly is being said and not what you want it to say.
